Women@CC - Georgia Tech Craft Center

September 1st, 2010 by Candis Pham

Thank you to all the wonderful Women@CC (& guys ^_^) who came out to the Craft Center yesterday!  We had reserved the Craft Center Playpen and painted a range of items from piggy banks to drinking glasses.  The event was a huge success (over 20 attendees!) and everyone I talked to seemed to have a great time!

Grace Hopper 2010 Scholarships for Georgia Tech Students!

August 7th, 2010 by Candis Pham

My fellow GT CoC girls, please apply!  This is an amazing opportunity and with the conference in Atlanta this year, I can guarantee *wink, wink * that this year’s conference will be special ;P.

A message from the Associate Dean of Undergraduate and Graduate Affairs:

“Dear Students,

Last week Dean Galil sent an email about the Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing conference coming to Atlanta September 28-October 2, 2010. The College of Computing is a major sponsor again this year and we want as many of our outstanding Georgia Tech Women in Computing at the conference as possible, so we are offering 25-35 scholarships to our women students that will cover your attendance.

To apply, please fill out this application. The deadline is FRIDAY 9/3 and winners will be notified by TUESDAY 9/7.

Winners will be selected by a committee of faculty, staff and administrators. Anyone who applied to be a Hopper is still encouraged to apply for the College’s Scholarships. Those who are not selected will still be able to register at the early bird rate of $270.

If you haven’t been to Grace Hopper before, I highly encourage you to go. It’s an exciting few days of meeting other computing-folks-to-be such as yourselves from around the country, networking with major companies who are there to recruit you, and sharing your enthusiasm for computing with like-minded friends. Also this year, there will be a special treat spotlighting our own Georgia Tech Women in Computing on opening day. Stay tuned for more.

Good Luck!
Charles L. Isbell
Associate Dean, Undergraduate and Graduate Affairs”

Grace Hopper 2010 – From the GT CoC Dean

August 7th, 2010 by Candis Pham

“Dear Faculty, Staff & Students,

For several years now, the College has been involved with the Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing. The event is a collection of conferences that together promote, enhance and laud the accomplishments of women in computing and related technical fields.

This year, Grace Hopper will be held in Atlanta, Sept. 28 to Oct. 2, and the College of Computing is a gold-level academic sponsor. Several of our faculty are speaking at conference workshops: Amy Bruckman, Beki Grinter, Mary Jean Harrold, Beth Mynatt and Ellen Zegura. Speaking also are graduate students/recent grads Jill Dimond and Erika Poole (starting this fall as assistant professor at Penn State, but we still claim her!). Also the College will be working hand in hand with Grace Hopper staff to publicize the conference (and CoC’s involvement) to both local and national media.

I write with two goals: First, to make you aware of this important event and the College’s central role. And two, to urge our students to attend. To defray registration costs, there will be some 20 to 30 scholarship opportunities. More details about those scholarships will be distributed next week.

For any questions about the College and Grace Hopper, contact Jennifer Whitlow in the Office of Outreach, Enrollment and Community.

Congratulations to all of those who are speaking at Grace Hopper, and I look forward to hearing stories from all those who attend!

Best regards,

Zvi Galil

John P. Imlay Jr. Dean of Computing”

Women@CC - Raising Sign-ups by 700%!!

July 25th, 2010 by Candis Pham

Georgia Tech FASET.  The Women@CC don’t traditionally recruit at FASET.  We just have such a targeted group of people to advertise to, most people wouldn’t find the time worth it.  At the summer FASET, we recruited 1 out of the 3 girls that were majoring in computing.  At the second FASET, we recruited one more.

Then came FASET 3.  We recruited 7 girls (one was even biochem!) … and raised our average up by 700% :D.

The Women@CC

The Women@CC is all about “Welcoming, Supporting, and Celebrating Women in Computing at Georgia Tech.”  It’s no secret that guys greatly outnumber girls at Georgia Tech… that whole dreaded ration thing?  :P  Well, get this.  In the College of Computing at the end of this past Spring 2010 semester, the girl to guy ratio was 1 girl for every 7 guys!

With a ratio like that, it’s always nice to know the other girls who can relate.  The Women@CC are a unique breed of women coming together to talk about our many professional opportunities, academic endeavors and of course have fun!  If you’re classes start to weigh you down, chances are that there are girls in the Women@CC who have gone through those classes before and would be happy to help you out.  Our events range from exclusive corporate luncheons and tech talks (with companies such as Avanade, Google, Yahoo, and Harris) to fun community building events (such as the Yahoo! Field Day Picnic) and from movie nights to Computing Conferences around the world.  This coming semester, we’re even taking a bunch of our girls to the FOX theater to see The Sound of Music … FREE!

Georgia Tech FASET - Freshman Orientation

June 25th, 2010 by Candis Pham

With summer at Georgia Tech comes GT Freshman Orientation!  This year, the Women@CC are representing the CoC by hosting a table at the organizations fair.  Here, incoming students can peruse just some of the hundreds of student organizations at Georgia Tech.  This years FASETs are as follows…

Thursday, June 24 - 25 (for summer freshmen)

FASET 1: Sunday, July 11 - Monday, July 12

FASET 2: Thursday, July 15 - Friday July 16

FASET 3: Sunday, July 25 - Monday, July 26

FASET 4: Thursday, July 29 - Friday, July 30

FASET 5: Thursday, August 12 - Friday, August 13

FASET 6: Wednesday, August 18 - Thursday, August 19

I got together with some of the Women@CC to build a backdrop and table display for the FASETs.  I completely fail at glueing letters onto the backboard while it’s laying backwards in front of me.  We decided the backwards letters almost give it a goofy charm :P.  Also, if you’re an incoming freshman, come visit us at the organizations fair!  … and ask us about the little holes my cat left in the backboard.  It’s a funny story ^_^.

For more information about FASET, visit, their website at faset.gatech.edu or http://successprograms.gatech.edu/faset/.

Refrigerator Ladies: ENIAC Programmer’s Project

May 21st, 2010 by Candis Pham

“Did you know, 60 years ago, six young women programmed the ENIAC, the first all-electric programmable computers?”

Top, from left to right:  Kathy Kleiman (ENIAC Programmers historian), Jean Bartik, Marlyn Meltzer, Kay Antonelli; Bottom:  Betty Holberton

Most people didn’t know this until the mid 80s.  Women have been greatly misrepresented in the field of computing.  When these six  amazing women’s picture was found, they were reduced down to “refrigerator women” who were just posing in front of the computer to look pretty.

A friend of mine sent me this article summarizing their story:  http://abcnews.go.com/print?id=3951187

To learn more about the ENIAC ladies, feel free to visit their website at http://eniacprogrammers.org/

Phantasma 2009!!

October 31st, 2009 by Candis Pham

As one of the Women@CC Co-Chairs, I may be a little biased, but Phantasma was amazing!! It may have been one of the best CoC student organizations events this semester. So many people came, everyone seemed to be getting really involved with the contests and games and seemed to be having fun.

It started to rain, so we had to resort to our rain location in the Klaus Atrium. This was actually our first choice of location, but because there was another event that didn’t end until 3p, we put it down as a back-up. It’s a good thing we did because we couldn’t have had the entire event outside with the weather like it was. We only had an hour to set up, but so many people came to help out. It all pulled together really well.

We had so many other participating student organizations. The face painting and caricatures was sponsored by Gourd, the Chubby Bunny food eating contest sponsored by UPE, the FIREwall did Musical Chairs, M@CC did the Trick or Treat Roulette game, and SAB and CISCO brought Trivia. When I took the position of Women@CC Chair, one of my main goals was to bring the student organizations more together to bring more people together. This event makes me happy ^_^.

There were so many events, contests, and interesting people at Phantasma this year… I took over 90 pictures! To see my pictures, feel free to visit my Picasa page at http://picasaweb.google.com/touching.the.sky/20091030Phantasma?feat=directlink.
